A Reminder of What We Can Do Together

A Reminder of
What We Can Do Together

Water is something many of us take for granted until we begin to understand what it means to live without enough of it. In Maharashtra, the question of water has never been just about the monsoon. It is connected to farming, livelihoods, families, and the everyday uncertainties that people in drought-prone regions have to navigate. Paani Foundation’s work brought attention to an important idea: that communities, when given the right knowledge and the opportunity to work together, can become active participants in changing their circumstances.

The Satyamev Jayate Water Cup encouraged villages across Maharashtra to come together for water and soil conservation. What made the initiative meaningful was the spirit of shramdaan – the idea of contributing one’s time and effort towards something that benefits everyone. In 2019, I had the opportunity to participate in the Mahashramadaan movement as a Jalmitra. It was a small opportunity to be associated with a much larger effort, one that belonged, above all, to the people who were willing to work for the future of their own villages.

There is something humbling about remembering that meaningful change does not always begin with one extraordinary person or one grand gesture. Sometimes, it begins when people decide to work alongside one another, with patience, determination, and a shared purpose. Paani Foundation’s work also reminds us that water conservation is not someone else’s responsibility. The way we use water, the choices we make, and the attention we give to the environment are all part of the same conversation.

I remain grateful to the people and organisations who make space for more of us to participate in such efforts. And, most importantly, to the communities whose hard work reminds us that the desire to build a better future is already present in so many places. It deserves our respect, our attention, and our continued support.
